Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Join in at home and read your child a bedtime story. Studies show that reading a bedtime story six days a week can give kids almost a year’s head start when they begin school. Reading has also been shown to develop empathy, promote critical thinking and help children find a sense of self.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Do you have a great idea to improve your area?

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Project applications close 15 May 2019.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Science Expo Night - 16 August

Scholastic Book Club Information

The next Scholastic Book Club edition to come out is Issue 3. Last week's newsletter indicated that this issue had been distributed to students, however, that is not the case. Issue 3 of the Scholastic Book Club catalogue has not yet arrived at the school. We expect them to arrive in the first week of Term 2 (and in week 2 at the latest). They will be distributed to students in the week that they arrive. Book Club orders are generally due back to the school around two weeks after they are distributed. We would like to apologise for this misinformation.

Value of the Month Assembly 1 April

Congratulations to all four Futsal teams who played extremely well today! Teams 10B and 12B made it all the way to the quarter finals and teams 10A &12A came runners up in the Grand Final. This means that teams 10A and 12A will go through to the next round which will take place in Newcastle later this year.

This Thursday from 9am to 11am students from Years 3-6 who have returned their note for the Game Training Main Event will participate in a coding workshop where they will create a virtual world and import customisable characters into this world as part of an introduction to creating commercial quality digital games. The smoke alarms went off this afternoon in the new building, the classrooms near Langford Drive (1R, 1M, 2E, 1/2H, 2K, 2JB). Students were evacuated, however this was a false alarm and all students returned safely to their classes.

Footsteps Dance Program

The launch of PBL across Kariong PS has been very successful. Students are being rewarded regularly with PBL RESPECT awards for demonstrating our value of RESPECT on a daily basis, both in the classroom and in the playground. Next week our school will be distributing PBL awards for our value of RESPONSIBILITY and students will participate in daily lessons focussing on responsible behaviours. Dear Parents,

Many thanks to our wonderful P&C Committee for organising lunch for our students at our Athletics Carnvial this Friday.

All lunch orders were due in last Friday (1 August 2014) and orders for the day have now been finalised.

NO OTHER LUNCH ORDERS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

Students who did not place a lunch order will need to make sure they bring their own lunch on the day.

Our students leaders have been busy creating a Student leaders website which is being launched in Education week 2014. Please take some time to look around the website and give some feedback to our students leaders on what you liked about the site, and any ideas you would like to see them incorportate into their website. This is a great way for all our students to get to know their student leaders, and for our students leaders to communicate with the school, and the Kariong community.

Parent/Teacher Interviews

Your class teacher will be holding parent/teacher interviews in Week 2 and 3 of Term 3. We are booking online this year and ask you to go online to School Interviews to book an interview time with your class teacher. The event code for the school interviews is NSU2U. Bookings will officially open on Friday 27 June at 3:30pm.

P&C Cookie Dough Fundraiser

The P&C are running a Billy G's Cookie & Biscuit Dough drive. Notes were sent home on Friday 16 May and orders including money need to be back at the school by Friday 30 May. Ten varieties to choose from, even a Doggie Biscuit Dough.

Year 3 Excursion

Let's hope the weather is kind to us so we can attend our excursion to the Marine Discovery Centre and Bateau Bay rockpools on Tuesday 27th May for 3L and Thursday 29th May for 3A and 3T. Revised permission notes will be coming home (and available in the notes section). If your child was unable to attend the postponed excursion you can still pay for them to attend the upcoming event.

Opportunity Classes for 2015

Application for Opportunity Class placement in Year 5 in 2015
Parents are required to submit an application by 16 May 2014. Generally students are in Year 4 in 2014 when applying for Year 5 entry in 2015.

Parents of students currently enrolled in a NSW public school with access to the internet, a printer and their own email address (not the student's) should apply for opportunity class placement online by going to this internet website: www.schools.nsw.edu.au/ocplacement.

Online applications open on Monday 28 April 2014. All other applicants must complete an official printed application form. Late applications will not be accepted after the closing date of 16 May 2014 except in areas where there is a shortage of suitable candidates.

Application packages will be available in schools from 28 April 2014.

Premier's Reading Challenge 2014

Kariong Public School is again participating in the Premier's Reading Challenge. This program aims to promote the love of reading through quality books. Students can log on and start recording books they have read from September 1, 2013 using their existing DET User ID (Portal Username) and password at the Premiers Reading Challenge website.

Go to the website to check a list of books recommended for your child's age group. Please read the complete rules for this challenge on the Premiers Reading Challenge website. Their entry needs to be submitted on or before 22nd August 2014 to qualify.

If you need assistance in logging on, or for a copy of a personal reading log form, please come and see either Mrs Ferrie or Mrs McGann in the Library at the school or send an email to lesley.ferrie@det.nsw.edu.au.

From the beginning of this year we will not be printing newsletters and sending them home with the students. It is important however that you are fully informed of what is happening at the school and we are keen to help you access the schools newsletter.

If you wish to have the newsletter emailed to you each week please email your request giving your email details to the school email: kariong-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au.

Alternatively the schools newsletter will be available on the schools website for viewing.

Newsletters are published on Friday each week. Please make it a routine to read the newsletter online each Friday.

EFTPOS Now Available

We are thrilled to announce that an EFTPOS terminal has been installed in the front office which will provide an additional method of payment for our parents and caregivers.

As well as being able to pay by cash and cheque, we believe that many families will find it convenient to pay directly from their savings/cheque accounts or by credit card.

All school payments including fees and excursions can now be paid using this option.

There is no minimum purchase amount but please be aware we are unable to offer a cash out facility.

P&C Meeting next Monday

All parents and carers are invited to a P&C meeting, to be held in the school Hall on Monday 8th August starting at 7:30pm. At the meeting we will outline our plans for the future direction of the Association, and accept new memberships. An AGM will be organised to be held shortly afterwards to elect a leadership team to take the Association forward.

This will be a short, positive meeting. We hope to see you there.

Year 6 DVD

Dear Parents of Year 6 students,

Yesterday we sent home notes about a concern with the material on the CDROM prepared by the parent committee who organised the Year 6 farewell. I regret that the letter was sent out prematurely. The matter had not been fully investigated and we now understand that we failed to follow the best course of action to determine the cause of the problem. We have now established that the problem was NOT with the DVD or USB drives. The parent who notified us of the material has found that the problem was caused by inappropriate material on her home computer.

I would like to apologise to the parent committee and in particular to the Vilensky family for the distress that this has caused. There was absolutely no problem with the DVDs and they will be available from the school at the beginning of next term.

The Vilensky family's contribution to the school over a ten year period has been very significant in terms of their work in the P&C and their work behind the scenes on many activities, the most recent of which was undoubtedly the best Year 6 farewell ever. It is a matter of great regret that this situation has marred their last day as parents at our school.

KPS Gets Energised

Kariong Public School now generates its own electricity with the installation of solar panels.

At Kariong Public School we were lucky enough to install a Solar Photovoltaic System under the National Solar Schools Program.

Our school received $50,000 towards the purchase and installation of a 5kWp system on the administration buliding.

The installation of this system, along with the 5kWp Solar System being installed on our new building under the Building Education Revolution, will allow us to offset our power consumption with clean renewable energy.

We expect that when the second system comes on line we will be able to generate an excess of energy during the weekends and holidays that can fed back into the national grid and reduce our power costs.

Online Surveys

Oline Surveys tell us how you think our school is performing.

To assist us in finding out how parents and children think that our school is performing we have set up two online surveys, one for parents and one for the students.

These surveys can be accessed from home, or even your mobile phone in many cases.

The first survey is meant for the students. Parents may like to help younger children complete the survey. Please note, the survey is locked so that you can only do it once, if you have more than one child it will need to be a family entry.

KPS Receives Environment Award

Kariong Public School received and Award at the recent Environmental Awards Ceremony hosted by Gosford City Council at Laycock St Theatre.

Kallen Farley and Madison Down represented Kariong Public School's Environment Club at the awards ceremony. Kariong Public School received an award for the environmental initiatives that the school has implemented this year.

Kariong Public School's environment club has been very active this year with the major project being the bush regeneration near the top playground. The school was assisted with this project by Kevin Gaia from The Gaia Eco Sustainability Services.

The aim of the project was to regenerate the bush track which includes plants that are native to the area and were used by the indigenous people for food and medicine. While undertaking this project students gained a greater understanding of the functions of certain plant types. They also gained some understanding of basic landscaping techniques and the importance of placing plants in the environment that best suits them.

Other initiatives that the environment club implemented include.

Worm farming/composting
paper recycling
tree planting

The club also designed a mural for the local Kariong Eco Garden.

Staff Development Day Fri 2 July

Staff Development Day for term 3 has been moved to the last day of this term i.e. Friday 2 July. This change is to allow us to continue our maths training with Mr Tickle, which has been very beneficial to all staff.

As a result the students last day for term 2 is Thursday 1 July and students will return in term 3 on Monday 19 July. Please do not send you child/children to school on Friday 2 July as their will not be anyone available to supervise them.

We wish all of you a happy and safe holiday and look forward to seeing you on Monday 19 July for the start of term 3.

Australian Titles Success

Congratulations go to Jaimee and Paige on their success at the Australian Titles on the weekend. Both Jaimee and Paige came third in the Discus in their respective age divisions. This is a fabulous achievement and a great reward for all their hard work and perseverance.

Solar Panels Installed

Over the next few weeks we are having solar panels installed to offset some of our power usage. The technology includes linking the system to our school computer network so that the children can watch both our power consumption and the amount being produced by the solar panels. Quite apart from the saving on our power bills it will be interesting to see how we can use clean solar power to reduce our usage of very dirty coal generated power.

Construction Commences

Construction of our new classrooms will commence over the holidays. Whilst the construction is underway we have made some temporary parking arrangement for the staff on the Truscott Avenue side of the school. We are going to be very stretched for parking while the work is going on so once again we emphasise that the car pards are for staff and authorised persons only. If you do not have a parking authority from the principal due to disability or other factors please do not park in the school grounds.
